Dr. Megan L. Garcia

Dr. Megan L. Garcia is a board certified general surgeon who has been working at the Grossman Burn Center at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri since it opened in 2013. She earned her medical degree from the University of Missouri- Kansas City School of Medicine. She completed her medical residency at the University of New Mexico School of Medicine. Dr. Garcia is a Fellow (FACS) with the American College of Surgeons, a Chair of the Midwest Division of the American Burn Association, an Inductee into the Arnold P. Gold Honor Society and a Looking to the Future Scholarship recipient for the Society of Thoracic Surgeons.

Dr. Jeffrey W. Colyer

Dr. Jeffrey W. Colyer has been working for the Grossman Burn Center since 2017, specializing in reconstructive cases.  Dr. Colyer earned a bachelor’s degree in economics from Georgetown University, a master’s degree in international relations from Cambridge University, and a medical doctorate from University of Kansas, School of Medicine.  At home in Kansas, Dr. Colyer is driven to serve his community.  As a craniofacial/plastic surgeon he is passionate about reconstructing complex skull and facial deformities in children. Sworn in as the 47th Governor of the state of Kansas in 2018, Governor Jeff Colyer, M.D. is a fifth generation Kansan from Hays who is dedicated to making a difference in people’s lives on the personal, state, national and international level.

Dr. Stella Cohen

Dr. Stella Cohen is a board certified pulmonary and critical care specialist who joined the team at the Grossman Burn Center at West Hills Hospital in 2018. She believes in a compassionate, communicative, and educational approach to patient-centered care. Her specialties include burn airway management, pulmonary disease, internal medicine, and critical care.

Dr. Malcolm I. Smith

Dr. Malcolm I. Smith has more that 25 year's experience managing patients in various medical and surgical intensive care units and wards.  He graduated from University of Southern California Medical School and then trained at UCLA in Internal Medicine, Critical Care Medicine and Pulmonary Medicine. He has been on faculty at UCLA since 1994 and is a Clinical Professor of Medicine at David Geffen - UCLA School of Medicine.

Dr. Muhammad Ashraf-Alim

Dr. Muhammad Ashraf-Alim graduated from Dow University in Pakistan, Summa Cum Laude in 1989.
He did his residency in internal medicine at Wayne State University, Detroit, Michigan and a fellowship at UCLA.  He has been a consult in pulmonary medicine and sleep disorder medicine in Bakersfield for more than twenty years. Special interests include COPD, asthma, pulmonary fibrosis, and sleep apnea.

Dr. Ilyas Burny

Dr. Ilyas Burny is double boarded in pediatrics and critical care medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics. He joined Valley Children’s as a pediatric hospitalist in May 2011. He currently provides pediatric intensivist coverage on behalf of Valley Children’s Medical Group at Lauren Small Children’s Center and the Grossman Burn Center at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital. He has more than 20 years’ pediatric experience in ambulatory and emergency department settings. He came to Valley Children’s from Children’s Hospital, University of Missouri-Columbia in Columbia, Missouri, where he served as an assistant professor and pediatric intensivist. Prior to that, he worked as a pediatrician at SEMO Health Network, a federally qualified community health center (FQHC) in New Madrid, Missouri. He received his medical degree from Osmania Medical College, Osmania University, in Hyderabad, India. His postdoctoral experience includes completing a residency in pediatrics at Hurley Medical Center, Michigan State University in Flint, Michigan, and a fellowship in pediatric critical care medicine at Children’s Hospital of Michigan, Wayne State University, in Detroit. During his career, Dr. Burny has held various pediatric positions in India, the United Kingdom and Saudi Arabia. He has published his work in peer-reviewed journals such as the “Journal of Pharmacy Technology” and “Pediatric Critical Care Medicine.” Topics have included medication use and errors in tertiary-care children’s hospital intensive care unit, and diagnosis and management of acute thiamine deficiency in diabetic ketoacidosis. He is a member of several professional organizations, including the American Academy of Pediatrics and Society of Critical Care Medicine.

Dr. Ricardo Rene Flores

Dr. Ricardo Rene Flores is double boarded in pediatrics and critical care medicine by the American Board of Pediatrics. He joined Valley Children’s as a pediatric pulmonologist in February 2017.  He currently provides pediatric intensivist coverage on behalf of Valley Children’s Medical Group at Lauren Small Children’s Center and the Grossman Burn Center at Bakersfield Memorial Hospital.  He received his medical degree from David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA and has been in practice for more than 20 years.  He is currently licensed to practice medicine in California and Iowa. 
 

Kurt Richards

Kurt Richards is a Physician Assistant who has been working at the Grossman Burn Center since 2003. He received his Physician Assistant license from Western University of Health Sciences and his Masters of Science from Arizona School of Health Sciences.  He is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, California Academy of Physician Assistants, and the American Burn Association. Kurt handles Burn Unit inpatient and outpatient care, he is an assistant surgeon on burn and trauma cases.

Bob Hafner

Bob Hafner is a Nurse Practitioner who has been working at the Grossman Burn Center at Research Medical Center in Kansas City, Missouri since it opened in 2013. He received his Masters of Science in Nursing from the University of Southern Indiana, and his Bachelors of Science in Nursing from the University of Kansas. He is a member of the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, American Association of Critical Care Nurses, and the American Burn Association. Bob handles inpatient and outpatient care in the burn center, and assists in surgeries with both burn and trauma cases. Bob has also been serving our country in the US Army Reserves since 1995.

Lacey Kapp

Lacey Kapp is a certified Physician Assistant who joined the Grossman Burn Center team in 2022. She attended the University of California, Davis where she received her Master of Health Services degree in Physician Assistant Studies. She is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, California Academy of Physician Assistants, and the American Burn Association. At Bakersfield Memorial Hospital, Lacey is responsible for the comprehensive inpatient and outpatient care of our pediatric and adult patients. Additionally, she is an assistant surgeon on all acute burn and reconstructive cases.

Dr. Jonathan Simons

Dr. Jonathan Simons has been in private practice since 1995. From that time he has been the Director of psycho social services at the Grossman Burn Center.  His education includes the University of Southern California, Antioch University and Ryokan College where he received his Doctor of Psychology in Clinical Psychology. Dr. Simons is a specialist in providing trauma-related psychotherapy, grief and bereavement-related psychotherapy, and chronic health related psychotherapy.  He lectures frequently on the topic of Psychological Trauma and Recovery. Dr. Simons is a member of several associations for marriage and family therapists, in addition, he is a founding member of SCAN (suspected child abuse and neglect) team at the Grossman Burn Center.

Dr. Alexander Majidian

Dr. Alexander Majidian is a board certified plastic and reconstructive surgeon.  He attended Tulane University School of Medicine, followed by a general surgery residency at Northwestern Memorial Hospital, and a plastic surgery residency at the University of Missouri, Kansas City.  He subsequently completed fellowships at the University of Alabama in Birmingham and Georgetown University in Washington, D.C..

He is a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons, and an instructor in Advanced Burn Life Support for the American Burn Association.  He is also a Medical Expert for the California Medical Association  Dr. Majidian has published numerous articles in plastic surgery and burn surgery, and has worked at the Grossman Burn Center since 1996.

Dr. Matt Young

Dr. Matt Young has worked for the Grossman Burn Center since 1978, specializing in Pediatrics. He attended University of Texas Medical School.  He did his pediatric residencies at the Bowman-Gray School of Medicine and Children's Hospital in Los Angeles. He was Chief Resident at Cedars Sinai Medical Center. He is an Assistant Professor of Medicine at UCLA at the University Of California Los Angeles School Of Medicine.  He is a member of the American Burn Association, California Burn Association, American Academy of Pediatrics, International Society of Burn Injuries and the Los Angeles Pediatric Society. He has done many lectures on Pediatric Burns and Child Abuse.

Dr. Edwin Garcia

Dr. Edwin Garcia is a board certified fellowship trained burn surgeon. He completed his academic and surgical training at the Keck School of Medicine at University of Southern California and has been practicing acute and reconstructive burn care since 2014. He is a member of the American Burn Association and is an active American Burn Life Support instructor. Dr. Garcia believes in a compassionate and comprehensive approach to burn care, to optimize results and have a positive impact on patients and their families.

Dr. Maryum H. Merchant

Dr. Maryum H. Merchant worked as a private practice hospitalist in Southern California for three years after completing her residency in Internal Medicine at UCSF-Fresno in 2007. She then pursued a fellowship in Pulmonary/Critical Care Medicine at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. Over the course of her fellowship, she has gained significant experience in managing patients with advanced lung disease, including transplant, chronic obstructive lung disease, pulmonary hypertension, and interstitial lung disease. She is currently a Clinical Assistant Professor of Medicine at David Geffen - UCLA School of Medicine. She is a lead pulmonary/critical physician for Burn care at Grossman Burn Center at West Hills Hospital. She is also a member of American College of Chest Physician (ACCP) and American Thoracic Society (ATS).
